Red Kites on the Ground

Yesterday we had our first ever close encounters with Red Kites on the ground.  Initially, there was one bird crouched on the ground.  We approached a gate to watch more closely, and it remained where it was.  A crow appeared to be bothering it, and I was asked if it was ill.  Why did it stay were it was, when 12 humans were fairly close to it?  Then suddenly, it's patience snapped and it lunged for the crow.  We could then see it was fine, and was trying to protect some food hidden in its talons.  Later, another Red Kite flew in and it seems the food was stolen.  Eventually, the remaining bird flew off with its prize.  Overall, a very interesting encounter.  Bog standard  photos of the birds flying around in the strong winds will be added later.
