Scoping for a Scaup

Scaup
On Tuesday we travelled along part of the Hudson Way near Kiplingcotes.  One of the highlights was a Red Kite with roadkill.  It tried to pick it up several times, but was being mobbed by 2 crows, eventually another red Kite arrived, and it is believed this bird carried away the Rabbit.  Other birds seen included dozens of Yellowhammers, Buzzards, a Marsh Tit,  Bullfinches, Chaffinches, Red-legged Partridges, Fieldfare, singing Linnets, Greenfinch, Goldcrest, Goldfinch, Long-tailed, Blue & Great Tits etc

On Wednesday we had arranged a trip to a privately-owned hide on Hornsea Mere.  Here, we saw our first Scaup in 14 years, and not just one there were 5 of them; 2 drakes and 3 females.  We heard our first Chiffchaff on the walk in the woods.  The boats on the mere panicked the ducks in our direction.  I don't think we'd ever seen so many Goldeneye.  Also present were 4+ Marsh Harriers, GS Woodpeckers, Redwing, Mistle Thrush, Treecreeper, Jay, Bullfinch, Heron, Cormorant.  A Cetti's Warbler sang just outside the hide, but remained unseen.

On Thursday and Friday we went to another site on the Wolds.  The weather was a bit better on the Thursday with brighter weather and only light winds.  Friday was more overcast, and the winds were cooler, stronger and more cutting.  On both days we saw Red Kites, Buzzards, over 20 Bramblings, Linnets, Redwings, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Marsh Tit, Goldcrest, Long-tailed Tit, Song & Mistle Thrushes, GS Woodpecker, etc.  A Grey Wagtail was seen once flying over a cottage, but we didn't see it in its accustomed place near the 'weir'.
