Best Foot Forward

On Friday we enjoyed our only visit to Saltmarshe Delph this year.  Highlights included finding a singing Willow Tit, and hearing that after last year's failure, they bred in the area again this year.  We were accompanied by a male Cuckoo all day, with a female appearing briefly just before lunch.  The aggressive male Swan has fathered 6 cygnets this year, and for someone reason the Penn keeps escorting them backwards & forwards across the road!

After the 4.30 am start, I also stayed out until 10.45 looking for Nightjars and other crepuscular birds.  The Nightjars let us down in the rain, but Woodcocks and fireworks put on a fine display.  Before it got dark we were very lucky finding Woodlark and a female Adder.  Of course the long drive back meant I arrived home after midnight, so I felt hungover nearly all Saturday!
